Statistical Analysis Training !
04/2023 As we continue through 2023, like every year, we had our annual statistical analysis training session. Here, we train a group of highly motivated students the basics of statistical analyses. We hope that these students utilize these new skills during their time in the program and in the future as medical students. With the help of Anastasia and Nikki, the statistical training event was a great learning experience. These training sessions are organized by our wonderful Research Associates who have the skills and training from previous years to teach and mentor newer trainees. This is an amazing opportunity to build new skills and work together to help our group be more self sufficient and efficient in the research they take part in in this program and in the future as well. |

Interviewing Panel Event 2023 !
01/28/2023 This past Saturday, January 28, 2023, the RAP-EMCC team hosted an interviewing panel event for those who were interested in joining our program! We hosted this event in the Shock Trauma Center to allow for an immersive interviewing experience for prospective research associates. This was our second in-person interviewing session since COVID-19 began, and we hope to continue this tradition moving forward. These events allow current research associates to volunteer their time to interview candidates and gain experience with this. Our team thoroughly enjoys getting to know interested candidates and providing them with greater insight in what the program has to offer! If you are interested in joining the program, please contact us by clicking the "Join us" link below. |

New Publication Just Out !
09/2022 Our team just published a paper to the Journal of Emergencies, Trauma, and Shock (Volume 15) about the association between patients with soft tissue infections and septic shock. The team analyzed 269 adult patient charts from those that were transfered to the Soft Tissue Surgery team at our academic center. They found that 13% of these patients developed occult septic shock while 6% developed early septic shock. They also concluded that the presence of septic shock was associated with a higher chance of developing acute kidney injury. To read more, visit the online publication using this link! |

Recent Publication in AJEM !
06/2022 Our team has published a new article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine! The team conducted a prospective observational study to study the use of invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring and non-invasive cuff blood pressure monitoring. Using data collected from the CCRU, the team found that arterial invasive blood pressure monitoring was associated with change in clinical management in 34% of acute aortic dissection patients. This research indicates that invasive arterial catheters can be considered more often in hypertensive patients with acute aortic disease. To read more, visit the online publication using this link! |
Recent Publication in Western Journal of Emergency Medicine !
05/2022 Our team published a new article in the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine! In this study we investigated differences between invasive arterial BP (IABP) monitoring and non-invasive arterial BP (NIABP) monitoring for patients being treated for sepsis. After analyzing data from 127 patients, we found that among sepsis patients, the use of vassopressors was associated with significant differences in IABP and NIABP monitoring. New Publication in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine !
10/2022 A new article has been published by our team in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, Volume 60! In this article, our team sought to find an association between care in the critical care resuscitation unit (CCRU) and in-hospital death rates in individuals presenting shock. A retrospective analysis and multivariable logistic regression was performed in which results indicated that decreasing Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores during the patients’ time in the CCRU was associated with a lower likelihood of in-hospital mortality; however, the same was not concluded for decreases in lactate clearance measurements. More studies in the future are needed to confirm these conclusions. To read more, visit the online publication using this link! |
RAP-EMCC Biannual Meeting Fall 2022

New Publication in Journal of Critical Care Research and Practice Journal !
07/19/2022 A new article has been published by our team in the Critical Care Research and Practice journal, Volume 2022! In this article, our team explored the question of whether the critical care resuscitation unit (CCRU) is sustainable or not. A retrospective analysis was conducted to measure the volume of patients that were transferred from another hospital to the University of Maryland Medical Center CCRU, as well as the time interval from transfer request to bed assignment in the CCRU. Results indicated that the CCRU received the second highest number of transfers annually, and is in fact sustainable in regards to benefits to patients and the health system, in addition to reductions in lost admissions. More studies in the future should focus on patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness of the CCRU. To read more, visit the online publication using this link! New Publication in Journal of Critical Care Research and Practice !
04/15/2022 We recently published a manuscript in the Journal of Critical Care Research and Practice, Volume 2022! This retrospective analysis was conducted on interhospital transferred emergency general surgery (EGS) patients and focused on patient-level data. Due to the critical nature of these patients, the researchers hypothesized that transfer origin impacted patient outcomes. What was concluded from the findings was that patients transferred from the intensive care unit (ICU) had longer hospital stays and were more critically ill with higher mortality rates. More studies are needed to corroborate these findings. If you are interested in reading the study, please use this link to locate our study from the table of contents. RAP-EMCC Biannual Meeting Spring 2022

Baltimore Running Festival: Shock Trauma Running Team!
08/10/2021
Some of our Research Associates participated in the Baltimore Running Festival this year as part of the Shock Trauma Running Team! Our Research Associates chose to participate in the 5K, hoping to be able to attract more participants with a less daunting mileage.
The RAP-EMCC team had also participated in the 2019 Baltimore Running Festival and also chose to run the 5K along with the Shock Trauma Center team. We hope to gather more research associates to participate in these types of events in the future, especially since we so rarely get to see everyone in person.
Thank you to all of the research associates who participated, the Shock Trauma Center for organizing the running team, and Dr. Tran for providing us with RAP-EMCC shirts!

Through our program, research associates are occasionally able to observe medical procedures performed by UMMC physicians in the Critical Care Resuscitation Unit.
Hammad Baqai, a research associate who joined our program in January of 2020, was able to learn from Dr. Rea about how the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) circuitry is able to oxygenate a patient's blood while simultaneously removing carbon dioxide.
Dr. Rea is a critical care physician at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and is one of the healthcare professionals that our research associates are able to work with through RAP-EMCC.

This past Sunday, July 11th, RAP-EMCC was able to hold its first get together of all of the research associates since 2019! It was a special event because it celebrated an incredible 5 years for the group. Each year since the inception of the research associate program has shown to be more successful in terms of publications, conference presentations, and students accepted to professional schools than the prior year. We have gathered support and collaborated with faculty, Advanced Practice Providers, residents and medical students. I am very thankful for everyone's dedication and support of our program. - Dr. Quincy Tran
